CSPs use for Desalination:
Freshwater is precious and demand for fresh water is ever increasing with the growing population worldwide. Though three-fourths of the earth’s surface is covered with water, acquiring drinking water from sea water is a technological showcase. The most simple water purification process is called Desalination (removal of salt from sea water).
Hundreds of desalination plants are already operating in desert countries or, in drought-ridden areas. Some new plants are underway as usual here and there. Usually, countries invests their best technical inputs to provide fresh water for local population at the cheapest rate. Unlike energy, fresh water requirement system is a 24/7 supply commodity. So, a likely cheapest source could be CSPs installation as we all know Solar thermal plants (CSPs) are setting up in sun-spoiled deserts around the world. These plants truly are 24/7 clean energy resources in the world. CSP method is different compared to photovoltaic (PV) technology (which also harnesses the sun’s energy to electricity) biggest problem of which is when the sun is out.
CSPs worldwide are operating based on best suited technologies on set. It varies station to station. The core idea behind CSP technology is: i) first, retaining of very high levels of heat, making it like a thermal battery to use it later (night and day), ii) second, when electricity is needed, the stored heat gets dispatched through a heat exchanger to create super-heated steam to power a traditional steam turbine. This part of the process is similar to any conventional fossil fuel or nuclear power plant only with zero carbon emissions and with no fuel costs to add on.
Desalination plants can also operates through advanced technologies called Reverse Osmosis (RO). Plants that use RO, pushes salt water through polymer membranes that trap salt ions while allowing water molecules to pass through. This is an energy-intensive process. Plants that use heat generated by concentrated solar power arrays to distill seawater into fresh water is comparable in cost and output to some grid-powered desalination plants but not the high cost RO technologies. However, RO backed by grid electricity is an option in oil-rich Middle East.
CONCLUSION:
To make a balance with solar system’s peak generation hours and the utility’s peak load hours (after 5 p.m. evening) energy scientist’s effort so far are incredible. Finding a way to produce fresh water without burning fossil fuels is critical not just for the desert countries of the Middle East but the demand is from around the world. Unfortunately, solar-powered desalination water becomes three times as expensive: as the cost of water from grid-powered plants. So, it is still a challenge. Meanwhile we voiced our new slogan:
