Careful measurement of ‘SPEED’ of light rocked the foundations of nineteenth century Physics. Results from experiments established that LIGHT always moves at 186,282 miles per second (3×108 m/s), regardless of any observer’s motion relative to the light ray’s source. Meaning: measuring ‘speed of light’ while traveling on a moving train differs from measuring the ‘light speed’ standing outside (on the horizon or a plain field). Know that ‘Speed is a measure of distance traveled divided by duration of the journey (S=d/t)’. Einstein identified that because light is always observed to travel at the same speed, then observers moving relative to each other must have different notions of ‘d & t’. Einstein inference: ‘instead of a cosmic Big Ben we all carry our own accurate clocks, when we move relative to one another clocks tick at different rates resulting in different elapsed time between the same two events’. [Special Relativity Ref.1 ]
- LIGHT DOESN’T NEED A MEDIUM TO TRAVEL IN, AND THE SPEED OF LIGHT (IN VACUUM) IS THE SAME FOR ALL OBSERVERS.
- THE SPEED OF LIGHT IS FINITE BUT UNIVERSE IS 13.7 BILLION YEARS OLD & IT IS INFINITELY LARGE. MEANING, WE CAN ONLY SEE PART OF THE UNIVERSE (with the finite light speed available to hand)
Because the speed of light is very fast but finite, it takes time for light to reach us. Obviously, light travel time is not universal. Strictly speaking we always see things the way those looked a little bit earlier. Though, we normally do not notice any change in everyday life. Light travels so fast that it doesn’t matter about the short distances we see on Earth. (Ref.2)
Watching the clouds now is actually seeing the clouds the way they looked a millionth of a second before. Really, it doesn’t make a big difference in our regular life & living, but other than we the regular everyday people there are other living creatures in this Earth ― specially the micro to nanoworld creatures. Who knows light’s travel time creates what type of difference if any on those creatures’ world. And in macro world: Light from Sun takes 8 minutes to reach on the surface of Earth. The sun we are seeing now is actually looked like Eight (8) minutes ago, but because the Sun doesn’t normally change all that much in a few minutes, light’s travel time doesn’t make a big difference (or does it?). Infact, within those 8 minutes of time many, many, and many incidents had happened, is happening and will happen that we don’t know of.
- LASER LIGHT ALSO MOVES AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT BUT DOESN’T SPREAD MUCH.
- THE WAVELINGTHS USED BY MICROWAVE OVENS ARE TYPICALLY IN THE RANGE OF ABOUT 10 (TEN) CENTIMETERS, OR 4 INCHES.
- BECAUSE THE UNIVERSE EXPANDS AND IT ALLOWS ONE DIRECTION OF TIME AS FORWARD (―→). FOR THIS REASON, NONLOCALITY AND FASTER-THAN LIGHT SIGNALING ARE NEITHER IN CONFLICT WITH EINSTEIN’S PRINCIPLES NOR NECESSARILY CONSIDERED AS MYSTICAL.
As the universe expands, the wavelength of the light stretches (λ) and so its vibrational frequency (υ) decreases . Because the frequency is proportional to the energy of light (E = hυ), and the average energy determines the Temperature, the temperature of light drops with expansion.
